For a long time, Anwar felt like he stood out.

Not by choice.

Not by personality.

But because of something on the back of his head that he couldn’t ignore… and neither could anyone else.

What started as what many would call razor bumps or ingrown hairs had slowly evolved into acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN), a chronic inflammatory condition that reshapes the scalp over time.

The bumps grew. Thickened. Became impossible to overlook.

And with that, attention followed.

Not the kind anyone wants.

The kind that lingers a second too long.

The kind that makes you aware of yourself in every room you enter.

Anwar explaining how after AKN treatment people no longer stare at his scalp or treat him differently.

Living Under a Constant Spotlight

Before treatment, the condition was not just physical.

It was social.

Anwar describes a feeling many patients quietly carry. The sense of always being watched. Whether people thought it was ingrown hairs, keloids, or something else entirely, the attention never really went away because of the acne keloidalis nuchae bumps.

And over time, that awareness changes how a person moves through life.

How long they stay in conversations.
Where they choose to go.
How comfortable they feel just existing in their own skin.

What others saw as “just bumps” became something much heavier.

A constant presence.

Understanding What Was Really Happening

Like many patients, Anwar did not initially realize the depth of the condition.

Acne keloidalis nuchae is often mistaken early on for simple irritation from haircuts or barbering. But beneath the surface, it is driven by chronic inflammation and repeated injury to the hair follicles.

Over time, that inflammation can lead to painful lesions, scarring, and areas that resist healing.

For patients like Anwar, it becomes more than a cosmetic issue.

It becomes something that shapes confidence, identity, and daily life.

Finding the right diagnosis was not just a medical step.

It was the beginning of clarity.

Dr. Sanusi Umar removing painful AKN lesions from Anwar’s scalp during treatment.

The Shift No One Else Notices… But You Feel

After treatment and recovery, something subtle but powerful changed.

Anwar stopped standing out.

No more second glances.
No more quiet assumptions.
No more feeling defined by something he never chose.

What replaced it was something many people take for granted.

Anonymity.

The ability to move through the world without being noticed for the wrong reasons.

To exist without explanation.

To feel… normal.

And in that quiet shift, confidence begins to return.

Not all at once. But steadily.

Anwar after recovery feeling confident and no longer self conscious about his scalp appearance.

More Than Skin Deep

Anwar’s story is not just about treating scalp bumps.

It is about restoring something deeper.

The way a person feels in their own presence.

The freedom to walk into a room and not think twice.

The quiet peace of blending in… when for so long, standing out felt unavoidable.

And sometimes, the most powerful transformation is not becoming someone new.

It is finally feeling like yourself again.

Before the surgery, John remembers what life felt like. Heavy. Not just on his scalp – but on his choices, his energy, his sense of direction. The scalp keloids caused by acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN) were more than something visible on the back of his head. They shaped how he moved through the world.

While others might see scarring, John felt limited.

“You don’t want to do nothing,” he said.
“It just limits your life.”

It was not about appearance alone.

It was about the quiet ways a chronic condition can narrow your world. Fewer plans. Less motivation. A constant awareness that never really turns off.

For many patients living with severe scalp conditions, that feeling is familiar.

The body carries it. The mind carries it too.

John explaining how scalp keloids from AKN made him feel limited and affected his motivation in daily life.

The Moment After

After surgery, the room felt different.

Calmer in some ways. Uncertain in others.

Dr. Sanusi Umar checked in with John, making sure he was comfortable as the effects of anesthesia slowly wore off. Numbness is common in these moments, but awareness begins to return in pieces.

There was curiosity too.

John asked a simple question. Had the removed tissue been weighed?

Dr. Umar paused, then offered something more revealing.

“Are you ready for this?”

John and his sister Cheyenne answered at the same time.

“No.”

It was an honest moment.

Because surgery is not just clinical. It carries emotion. Anticipation. A mix of relief and disbelief at what has just taken place.

And sometimes, seeing the reality of what was removed makes everything feel real all at once.

Dr. Sanusi Umar showing John and his sister Cheyenne the removed keloid tissue after surgery.

More Than a Procedure

As the moment settles, something deeper becomes clear.

This is not just about removing keloids.

It is a turning point.

For John, the experience reshaped how he viewed care itself. He spoke not just about the outcome, but about the process. Being heard. Being understood. Having a physician who took the time to truly engage.

“Every single thing he does is to help people and to change people’s lives,” John said.
“It’s amazing to find a doctor who truly cares for his patients this much.”

There is gratitude in that statement.

But also something else.

Recognition.

Because when patients feel seen, not just treated, the entire journey changes.

The Beginning of Something New

The episode does not end with the surgery.

It pauses just before the next chapter.

Because what comes after is not just physical healing.

It is transformation.

A shift in confidence. A return of possibility. A life that begins to open again in ways that once felt out of reach.

And for John, this moment marks the line between what was… and what can now begin.

Before the surgery, John remembers what life felt like. Heavy. Not just on his scalp - but on his choices, his energy, his sense of direction. The scalp keloids caused by acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN) were more than something visible on the back of his head. They shaped how he moved through the world
